1. Spock
Spock takes a leading role in the preview. He is responsible for dropping the ice cube into the volcano to calm it down and save the planet. But does he have to be so annoying? Zachary Quinto might have a slight resemblance to Leonard Nimoy and that is what got him the part but when it comes to playing Spock, he is still off-key as he was in the 2009 film. Partly down to the script and partly down to his acting, Quinto cant convey the subtle wit and charm that made Nimoy-Spock so lovable. Quinto still delivers every line with the same speech pattern and tone. Listen to him talk and no matter what he is saying, it always sounds exactly the same. He is trying to make Spock sound intelligent, logical and unemotional but it just sounds like a bad parody of what you would expect a caricature of Spock to sound like. This was part of the reason that Spock was so unlikable in the 2009 movie. The script also doesnt do Spock any favors. Putting him in an annoying relationship with Uhura, Spock getting himself trapped in the volcano and then bleating on about the Prime Directive and how he doesnt want to be rescued, there is very little to actually make you like the guy. When everyone is debating on how to save him from the fiery death, I was sitting there just wishing they leave him there, at least that way he might find some warmth to incorporate into his performance. The same bipolar Spock that made nonsensical decisions like ejecting Kirk on to the ice moon in the first film is back in Into Darkness. Nimoy-Spock had his moments where he didnt understand a joke or put his life on the line for the greater good but he was never an annoying a-hole that you could quite happily slap. For a character that is second most important in the film after Kirk, making him unlikable is not the way to go. Now before I get accused of it, I'm not pre-judging the whole film based on a nine minute preview, I would be crazy to do so. This was the beginning of the film and its meant to reintroduce and show the crew working together saving the day, so maybe once the film gets going, it might pick up and surprise us. This is everything I picked up watching the preview. Those of us hoping to see a less disposable Star Trek, this footage didnt suggest that we will get what we want. Into Darkness is all about having a good time while you eat your overpriced popcorn, that is all. Star Trek 2009 was a bit like eating a Big Mac. It looks appetizing and all the ingredients are there but as you eat it, you cant escape the feeling that it's just a bit s***. And when you have finished, you are left unsatisfied and still hungry. Star Trek Into Darkness appears to be more of the same.
