2. The A-Team
This did make me laugh as I was watching the preview and I dont think that was the intended reaction the writers or director were hoping for. Its a year after the events in Star Trek 2009 and the crew have settled into their roles and feel comfortable working with each other. That is what we wanted after the crew was crowbarred onto the bridge in the first film. But with Kirk and McCoy running away from the tribe-aliens and Sulu and Uhura piloting a Shuttlecraft into the mouth of a volcano while Spock dangles from a rope, the whole set-up made them look like some kind of intergalactic A-Team. With all the action and one liners, the only thing missing was Sulu and Uhura hugging and letting out an 80s going over a cliff scream as the shuttle exploded around them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with action but what Star Trek 2009 and this preview showed us is that the writers will overload the film with relentless, brainless action. And to do that, all the crew will be KA-POWING their way through scenes rather than taking a more traditional, Starfleet approach. Why bother just dropping the Ice cube into the Volcano when you can have Spock deliver it in person. Forget Kirk and McCoy running to a waiting Shuttlecraft to escape, they will SWIM to the Enterprise. Sulu might be piloting the shuttle into a volcano but the ships communications officer Uhura has to go along to join in with the action. Its all just pointless and aimed at the lowest common denominator. And talking about Uhura, they might as well change her name to Lieutenant Concerned because when she isnt being sexy, all she does is look at Spock concerned. Every time Spock walks into a turbo-lift she has that same expression of a wife watching her husband go to war and that is all she did throughout the nine minute preview. Another reason to drop the Spock and Uhura relationship.
