Star Trek: Ranking Every Starfleet Uniform Worst To Best
3. Star Trek & Star Trek Into Darkness
Veteran costume designer Michael Kaplan had the unenviable task of rethinking the original 1960s Starfleet uniforms for JJ Abrams' rebooted Star Trek in 2009.
Unlike previous revisions of the Starfleet uniform, Kaplan chose to hew as closely as possible to William Ware Theiss' original designs, updating them with modern construction and materials, but keeping the same basic form. Kaplan included detailed "moto" pants and two-piece tunics with screen printed Starfleet insignias, details that would be adopted for the costumes in both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard.
Like Robert Fletcher's contributions to The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan, Kaplan produced numerous Starfleet uniforms for Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness – dress uniforms, cadet uniforms, flag officers' uniforms, training uniforms – each with their own distinct style. However the beautiful Enterprise uniforms with their vibrant colors and retro-futuristic stylings stand up as some of Star Trek's best costumes.
