Nowadays it€™s a given that if you€™re going to make a Trek movie, even one set in an alternate timeline, Nimoy will end up there. That wasn€™t always the case. Back during the development of Star Trek: Phase II (the TV series concept that became TMP), Nimoy had expressed no desire to return to the role he€™d made famous. He wanted to leave Trek behind him, and move on.

Thankfully, he agreed to come back, which was great. It gave us the fully-intact €œfamily€ that we€™d come to enjoy throughout the run of TOS. Had Nimoy not been involved, the movie might still have been ok, but it would likely have not been much of a success, and the franchise would likely have ended there.
