Star Wars: 10 Classic Characters Who Need Their Own Movie
6. R2-D2
I'll admit it: this sounds like a terrible idea. A spin-off for R2 would likely descend into a simplistic and silly kid's film with few redeemable qualities. R2-D2 deserves and needs so much more than this, though! Imagine a film akin to Pixar's WALL-E, but with the main character being the immensely sweet and increasingly brave astromech droid.
A movie doesn't need speech to express emotion or powerful plot, and R2 is a fantastic example of this. Through Episodes I-VI, R2 for a lot of fans was the heart of the universe; he didn't need lines or even a face to do this.
I have no doubt that with enough dedication and some of the innovation that Pixar possess, a R2 spin-off would be an incredible and heartfelt film which could detail the droid's experiences from being The Phantom Menace, between Episodes III and IV or even after the entire saga. We must remember that R2 is technically immortal: a spin-off could take place 1000 years after the fall of the Empire and detail events in the distant future.
An R2-D2 spin-off would have a very different feel to it as opposed to the franchise's other films, though this is one of the reason why it needs to happen. Looking at this expansive universe through a small and inconsequential droids mind, it could be a unique experience. I believe it would also be charming, just like many of Pixar's films before it.
