Star Wars: 10 Secrets Of The Lightsaber You Need To Know
6. Lightsabers Can't Cut Through Everything
One of the coolest aspects of the lightsaber is how freaking powerful it is. After seeing Jedi and Sith cleave through aliens and robots of all shapes and sizes without the slightest effort, audiences naturally assume this sacred weapon can cut through anything.
But that isn't true. While Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn battled Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, we see their weapons cannot penetrate the shield barriers that forces them to stop fighting.
In the Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano's lightsaber strikes are repelled by Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth's lance because it's composed of Beskar metal. The titular character's armour has also been shown to resist lightsaber strikes while he battles Ahsoka.
In The Last Jedi, Snoke's Elite Praetorian Guard deflect Kylo Ren and Rey's lightsabers with their gauntlets and weapons.
Probably the most interesting material to deflect lightsabers is cortosis armour, which is mentioned in the Thrawn Alliance novel. If a lightsaber comes into contact with this armour, the weapon will automatically deactivate, rendering the wielder vulnerable.
The lightsaber will always be awesome but that doesn't change the fact it has its limitations.
