Star Wars: 10 Side Characters With Awesome Back-Stories

8. R5-D4

That's right, even this calamitous astromech has a fleshed-out back-story to it. R5-D4 appears in the original film, as the robot nicknamed 'Red' that's originally bought into the Lars homestead, before blowing its motivator and replaced with R2-D2. R5-D4's tale is a bit of a tragic one. One of the last in its notoriously unreliable line, R5-D4 was almost always in a state of being sold to a new owner. As a result, the little droid became jealous of other robots that had loyal masters. R5-D4 became angry and depressed due to constant abuse after being taken by the Jawas, until he was advised by another droid that cooperation might result in a better owner down the line. In his quest to find Obi-Wan, R2-D2 sabotaged R5-D4, meaning it was once again returned to the abusive Jawas just seconds after finding a new home at the Lars' homestead. R5-D4 soon had better luck though, after he was sold to a Rebel Alliance spy, and given a job collecting data from an Imperial office in Mos Eisley. The droid finally found the loyal owner he'd been searching for, and was able to bring highly valuable information to the Alliance until the destruction of the second Death Star.
