Star Wars: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Darth Vader's Suit

3. The Suit Literally Feeds Him

Despite graciously inviting Han, Leia and Chewie to attend a banquet on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, we never actually see Vader eat or drink, in any of the episodic or spinoff movies he's appeared in.

But he has to have some sort of sustenance, right? Despite being "more machine now" than man, he's surely still human enough to warrant the need for energy by way of consuming food.

Well, it turns out that he does indeed "eat" - just not in the traditional sense.

There are several different explanations for exactly how he gets his munch on, and one can be found in the 2015 novel Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know:

"Darth Vader cannot eat normally because he has been injured so badly. Instead, his life-support armor feeds nutrient fluids directly into his body. In his private chamber, Vader can remove his helmet and use a feeding tube."

There are also references that indicate his helmet was fitted with feeding straws, through which the Sith Lord slurped RepMed vitapaste. Yummy.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
