Star Wars: 10 Truly Disturbing Side Character Backstories
9. Salacious B. Crumb
Jabba the Hutt's Palace was filled with all manner of eccentric and questionable characters. The giant space worm seemed to have a penchant for the absurd and bizarre. He had half-naked dancing Twi'leks, a live intergalactic blues band, and a giant beast kept in a pit beneath his hall. One of the most memorable creators inhabiting the place was the monkey-lizard jester, Salacious B. Crumb.
Crumb didn't have a single line of dialogue that we could understand, but his maniacal laugh and place of honour - perched in Jabba's fat rolls - made him a standout feature. He seemed to find Jabba's cruel acts amusing, being the first and loudest to laugh whenever the big worm acted out.
Crumb might have been a twisted little creature, but it could all have been an act in order to survive. Roughly twelve years before we see Crumb in the Return of the Jedi, he was found hiding on one of Jabba's ships. Rather than killing the stowaway outright, however, Jabba made an agreement with the creature - whose race was known for their ability at humour.
If Crumb could make his new master laugh at least once a day, he would enjoy every luxury available to him. If he failed just once, however, Jabba would kill him.
If you were under that kind of daily pressure for twelve years, it's no wonder you'd develop an unhinged cackle.
