Star Wars: 12 Stupid Decisions From The Prequels That Actively Ruin The Originals
4. Obi-Wan Wasn't Trained By Yoda
The change of Yoda from lovingly-operated puppet to mouse-controlled CGI creation oddly didn't cause as much fan-strife as the fact the greatest Jedi Master used a lightsaber. Now, his fighting style is impractically embarrassing, but, the thing is, there's nothing in the originals to suggest that he couldn't use a lightsaber. If anything, it'd be stupid of him not to.
All this fuss over the events of later two movies, however, misses that the most glaring change to Yoda's character comes in The Phantom Menace. In The Empire Strikes Back, Obi-Wan explains that the almost-Muppet trained him, but when his Padawan days are shown in the prequels he's inexplicably under the wing of Qui-Gon Jinn.
Qui-Gon is one of the best characters introduced in the prequels (that's what happens when you hire Liam Neeson), but a wise-yet-rebellious Jedi Master could have factored into the story without being Obi-Wan's Master. In fact, outside of the symmetry of him being in the same position as Luke in A New Hope, there's no real reason for Kenobi to be an Apprentice at all (although that's a point for another day).
The scene in Attack Of The Clones where Obi-Wan interrupts Yoda training younglings was likely included to explicitly address this, showing that Yoda trained everyone, and thus Obi-Wan was 'technically' instructed by him, but boy is that a stretch.
