Star Wars: 12 Stupid Decisions From The Prequels That Actively Ruin The Originals
3. Obi-Wan Didn't Want To Train Anakin
If there's one element of Obi-Wan's past more resolutely stated than him studying under Yoda, it's his total drive to train Anakin. Across his various conversations about the not-so-good old days he paints a rather particular picture of the early days of his and Ani's relationship; the young-ish Skywalker was clearly Force adept, prompting the Jedi to "take it upon himself" to train him.
Now, in the prequels Anakin was indeed already showing Jedi traits and was apprenticed by a vehement Obi-Wan, but to get to that point you have to go through plenty of scepticism on Kenobi's part and completely ignore how integral Qui-Gon was to events.
There is a point of debate here that Obi-Wan's simply representing things in a skewed manner - obviously it would be unnecessary to ramble on and on about Qui-Gon and the taxation of trade routes - but the version of events presented in the prequels just doesn't match up with what's being hinted at here. The link between Obi-Wan's wonderment at Anakin's skill and his decision to train him are treated as linked events in Jedi, but in Menace they're rather inconsequential.
