Star Wars: 15 Show-Stealing Side Characters Who Shaped The Galaxy
14. Darth Maul
The amount of staying power Darth Maul has generated since his first appearance in The Phantom Menace is quite remarkable. Maul represented an on screen interpretation of a true Sith warrior. Add in his never before seen double bladed red lightsaber and fans still haven't stopped salivating.
While The Phantom Menace had its VERY vocal detractors, it proves to be a solid piece of the episodic movies. And much of that has to do with the introduction of Darth Maul. Even though his screen time was limited, the Sith assassin carried a presence unlike any other character not named Darth Vader.
Shaping The Franchise
With the Disney acquisition of the franchise, Maul's stock appears to be at an all time high. Most casual viewers see his fate at the end of The Phantom Menace after being cut in half and falling down a shaft. A true cinematic pity as Darth Maul could have easily filled the shoes of Count Dooku or General Grievous throughout the rest of the prequel trilogy.
Darth Maul is one of the best things to come out of the prequel trilogy. His character has been the inspiration for countless novels, comics, and a terrific revival in the Clone Wars animated series. Add in his current reemergence on Star Wars: Rebels and Darth Maul has had a successful 17-year career.
