Star Wars: 20 Things You Didn't Know About Return Of The Jedi

7. Mark Hamill HATED That Leia Was Luke's Sister

One of Return of the Jedi's most shocking revelations is that Luke and Leia are brother and sister, especially after their eyebrow-raising smooch in The Empire Strikes Back.

It wasn't just fans who found this reveal contrived and contradictory, though: Mark Hamill himself took umbrage with the twist, even claiming that Lucas himself came up with it last-minute during production.

In earlier versions of the script, Luke was going to have a separate twin sister character, Nellith Skywalker, who would tie into a much larger arc leading up to an originally planned Episode IX, as Luke sought to find Nellith.

Ultimately Nellith was folded into Leia and the character otherwise erased. Lucas apparently also had a secondary motivation for doing this, to stop fans writing to him begging that Luke and Leia would form a romantic relationship. Shippers are the worst right, George?
