Star Wars: 20 Things You Didn't Know About Return Of The Jedi
16. Every Take Of "Slave Leia" Had To Be Checked For Wardrobe Malfunctions
One of the most iconic aspects of Return of the Jedi, for better or worse, is the slave costume worn by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) when she's captured and enslaved inside Jabba the Hutt's palace.
The skimpy slave bikini actually came about because Fisher complained about the plain, non-form-fitting clothing she wore in the first two films.
Though George Lucas apparently told her this was to ensure Leia was differentiated from a typical "eye candy damsel in distress" and defined instead by the content of her character, Fisher wanted something which also emphasised her femininity.
And the actress certainly got her wish in Return of the Jedi, though because Fisher wasn't a fan of double-sided nipple tape typically used to cover an actress' breasts in such scenes, she decided to go without.
The trade-off was that a member of the wardrobe department had to check that Fisher was secured inside the metal bikini before every take, and legend suggests that numerous takes were unusable because the actress had a "wardrobe malfunction."
All of this in a kids' movie, remember.
