Star Wars: 4 Reasons Why People Dislike The Expanded Universe (And Why They're Invalid)

1. "It's Like Fan Fiction"

Lightsabers-Darth-Revan-Star-Wars-Knights-Of-The-Old-Republic-Ii-The-Sith-Lords-Darth-Malak-14- Like number four this is brought up by a lot of people. I don't understand it. I really don't. So, just because George Lucas didn't personally sit down and write every novel or game that makes it "fan fiction"? I see. Is every Batman tale not written by Bob Kane and Bill Finger fan fiction too? Or what about Spider-Man? Can only Stan Lee write his stories? Of course not. They are cultural narratives, or modern myth cycles for the 20th/21st Century also. This is not a new thing. In the Vatican, there are rooms full of vases that have images of well known myths like the Greek hero Herakles, Jason, the Trojan War cycle etc. Yet, some of these images do not have a textual equal i.e. they exist solely on these vases and nowhere else. Which means that there were many other versions of these stories, or other additions to these stories, at some point. People other than Homer wrote about Troy for example and their version of the story can be found on a lot of material evidence. Like Ajax and Achilles playing dice on the below vase, this isn't in Iliad either is the whole Trojan Horse thing. That is in the Aeneid. Virgil's Aeneid is the most famous example of classical expansion of existing stories. This is the "sequel" to the Iliad and is one of the most respected works that survives to us today from the ancient world. But by the above logic it is just "fan fiction" of Homer. According to the critics, this is because it was written nearly 700 years after the Iliad, it was not written by Homer and was written in Latin not Greek. This argument is simply groundless. The SWEU is merely continuing a tradition, a very ancient one at that, of myth making. People will always use myths to tell their stories, be it using Lightsabers, webs or ancient warfare. Once something is setup as cultural significance is becomes more than just a book, just a game or indeed just a series of movies. Lucas set out to make a modern myth to mirror those of the ancient world and he has done just that. Take another look at the SWU and you may be surprised. It is not as bad as you may think. I, Jedi is a great place to start. If I missed any reason why you hate the SWEU, let me know in the comments below.
