Star Wars: 50 Greatest Moments - Ranked

38. Chirrut’s Walk (Rogue One)

Star Wars Rogue One Chirrut
Lucasfilm

“I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me.”

Rogue One had a fantastic band of characters, but chief among them was Donnie Yen’s blind warrior Chirrut Imwe, who contextualised the Force in a new way: he didn’t use it as the Jedi did, but still followed it as a religion.

That paid off in this moment, as he performs the suicide mission walk to hit the all important switch. Guided by an unseen, well, Force, he somehow makes it safely through the blast of lasers, before dying a heroic death in the arms of his comrade Baze. It’s a moment that combines heat humanity and bravery with the spiritual aspect of the saga that is so much bigger than one person, and embodies why we care for the cause.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
