47. K-2SO’s Death (Rogue One)

Star Wars movies need a loveable droid, and that even applied to non-episode story Rogue One. Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO delivered the social skills of Threepio with the sass of Artoo, and made for one of the saga’s funniest new characters.

That humour, though, just made his eventual death all the more tragic. Holding off Stormtroopers so Jyn and Cassian can transmit the Death Star plans, he’s eventually overwhelmed but makes the decision to sacrifice himself for his new friends.

It’s a brave, bold character decision that completely changes how we view a droid who was largely comic relief, and in a movie full of deaths is one of the hardest hitting.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
