3. Droids Are Unique In Star Wars

The term “Droid” is in fact specific to Star Wars. For fans of both trilogies, one fully expects to see the word in a dictionary with R2D2 and C3PO next to it. Droids provide continuity to both trilogies along with the plethora of other artificially intelligent machines that serve important functions in the Star Wars universe.

Although Star Wars is a human story, the seemingly sentient sidekicks transcend both trilogies and are appreciated by audiences both young and old. Our two favourite droids are used as a literary tool, which introduces us to the originality of the writing by both their mere presence and their removed perspective. Because we experience Star Wars partly through their lens, the galaxy, its heroes, and villains all have an added gravitas.

One of the most original things in Star Wars comes from the decision by Lucas to have droids display human attributes. Artoo is like a toddler, a petulant child, and C3PO is like a butler. These human characteristics allow for rich characters that aren't human or alien. They're diverse and endearing, and one of the things parents can relate with their children about from the Star Wars universe.
