Star Wars 9 Title: What Does 'The Rise Of Skywalker' Really Mean?

7. Rey Might Be A Skywalker After All

One of the most obvious interpretations of the title is that it will, as many fans of The Last Jedi feared, see J.J. Abrams retcon Kylo Ren's revelation in the last film, that Rey was born to junker nobodies and not related to Luke Skywalker in any way.

The title referring to this would certainly throw the retcon in fans' faces, yet considering that Luke is himself unlikely to rise in a movie that's basically going to phase out the old guard of actors, it definitely fits that it would relate to a younger character.

But given how much J.J. Abrams loves his mystery box, it seems incredibly unlikely he'd leave such a blatantly obvious revelation lying in plain sight, so like the much-debated meaning of "The Last Jedi", one suspects this is a very intentional misdirect on the part of Abrams and co.
