Star Wars: 9 Unused Force Awakens Concepts That Need To Be Revisited

4. Vader's Castle

The image above €“ drawn by Brett Northcutt and Erik Tiemens €“ was inspired by Ralph McQuarrie€™s The Empire Strikes Back concept art, which had been intended as the basis for an ultimately-unused setting, Darth Vader€™s Castle. It€™s a fierce-looking structure, harking back to Count Dracula€™s Transylvanian abode (with added lava and TIE Fighters). In the end, The Force Awakens didn€™t run with this idea and instead decided to give The First Order a wintery home in the shape of Starkiller Base. Since that€™s been destroyed, though, maybe they€™ll have to regroup at a place like this €“ a scary, imposing castle on a remote planet. Perhaps this castle could even be on Mustafar, where the young Darth Vader was all-but-defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi back in Revenge Of The Sith. For Kylo Ren, especially after having his arse handed to him by Rey in The Force Awakens€™ third act, this lava planet €“ where Vader first stumbled - could hold great emotional significance. Again, as with the droid fights, the architecture of this building would add something new to Star Wars canon. We€™ve seen plenty of castles and palaces (mainly on Naboo), but never any as terrifying and horror-inspired as this. It could be a great way for Episode VIII to differentiate itself from the previous Star Wars instalments.
