Star Wars: 9 Unused Force Awakens Concepts That Need To Be Revisited

3. Sunken Death Star

Another potential evil location for The Force Awakens was the remains of the second Death Star (the one blown up at the end of Return Of The Jedi). Production designer Rick Carter suggested that parts of this technological terror could have ended up crash-landing on a water planet and sinking below. One image (from concept artist Doug Chiang) posited that the Millennium Falcon could travel under water to investigate the remnants. The one above, by Ryan Church, sees someone floating around in the Emperor€™s throne room. Another - by McCaig and Chiang - has Rey swimming between gun turrets on the way to find something important. This important thing would have been the crucial map segment that allows The Resistance to locate Luke Skywalker. Instead, The Force Awakens gave the map pieces to Max von Sydow and R2-D2, negating the need for an underwater exploration set piece. However, these glimpses of submerged Death Star parts are incredibly eye-catching. Perhaps Episode VIII or IX could come up with another reason to include them, allowing for the franchise to look back on an iconic old setting in a unique new way. It'd certainly be better than introducing another - even bigger! - new Death Star.
