Star Wars: Darth Maul's ENTIRE ARC Explained

A Sith No More

Star Wars Rebels Darth Maul

Maul turns up again in Rebels, 14 years later, still seeking to achieve vengeance on his growing list of enemies. He's completely alone now. His minions have long since scattered, betrayed him, or been discarded. And without Savage at his side, there will be no ruling the galaxy. Kenobi, the Empire, the Sith - all will be brought to ruin so Maul can have his revenge.

It's no surprise that Maul repeatedly attempts to recruit Rebels protagonist Ezra Bridger as his apprentice. Maul sees a boy who had everything ripped out from under him, just as he had.

Maul can't comprehend Ezra's rejection of Maul's promises of power and revenge. How could you not want revenge on those who took everything from you? How could he and Ezra be so similar, yet so different? Why would his only kindred spirit reject him? During their last major encounter, fleeing for his life, Maul drops his facade, outright begging Ezra to join him - to be together as friends, as brothers.

We next see Maul wandering across the Dune Sea of Tatooine, having finally narrowed in on Kenobi. He finds Kenobi with Ezra, bidding his "apprentice" a casual farewell as Kenobi sends him away, Maul's desperation for companionship swallowed by his hatred for his nemesis. After surmising that Kenobi must be protecting something or someone very special - i.e. a young Luke Skywalker - the two draw their lightsabers.
