Star Wars: Darth Maul's ENTIRE ARC Explained
Maul At Peace
Their duel is brief and beautiful - the best in Star Wars canon. Kenobi takes the fighting stance of his former master, Qui-Gon Jinn. Maul launches toward him, using the same technique he used against Qui-Gon in Phantom Menace, just as Kenobi expected him to. He cuts Maul down in an instant.
Maul's eyes widen - not in horror at his imminent death, but in a lifetime's worth of understanding washing over him.
"Tell me..." he pleads, the light fading from his eyes. "...is it the Chosen One?"
"He is," Kenobi states, as a matter of fact, assuring his foe that Luke will bring about the fall of the Empire.
"He will avenge us," Maul gasps in his final breath, cradled in Kenobi's arms, experiencing the only moment of comfort he has ever known.
As with his brother's death and his rejection by Ezra, only at the moment of absolute defeat is Maul able to see something bigger than his own pain, his bitter quest for vengeance: that all life is connected through the Force. He did have a choice. He never had to suffer alone.
"If you define yourself by your power to take life - to dominate, to possess - then you have nothing."
