In Trevorrow's first draft of Episode IX, Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa was going to spend much of the movie gathering an army and attempting to inspire those around the Galaxy to rise up and put an end to the tyranny of The First Order once and for all.

Following Fisher's death, the decision was made to kill off her character early on, with her story arc being given to Poe Dameron and Chewbacca instead (for example, they would have been the ones to track down Lando Calrissian in a bid to convince him to join their cause rather than Leia).

In this piece of concept art, the iconic hero is shown on a newly created planet called Korilev. That would have served as the Resistance's base and, in both versions of the story, Kylo Ren's actions were going to weigh heavily on Leia. With that in mind, it's not hard to understand why she appears to be so sad here.
