4. Republic Commando

Let me start out by saying that Karen Traviss was hands down one of the best writers of the Star Wars EU. As a before mentioned avid lover of Boba Fett, the life she brought to this character was amazing. She brought a depth to Fett that we had never seen and only dreamed of before she came along. Before focusing on Boba in the Legacy Era, she focused on a series of books known as the Republic Commando series. Think Tom Clancy, slightly watered down in regards to the militarism, clone commandos and the Clone Wars. The Republic Commando books take place between the spans of Episode II and III. They focus on an elite group of Clone Troopers that do the tough missions. What is great about these books is that while this elite group is fighting the Separatist, they are also fighting their identities. Have they been bred to fight and die or do they have souls with a deeper purpose? What made these books great were the characters and the coverage of the Clone Wars. The video game was also a lot of fun with its focus on a similar group minus the moral conflict. Travis will probably be the only author I specifically call out through all of this but she is the reason these books come to life. You want to do ensemble stories, Traviss is your girl. Although the likelihood of seeing these as films is small, I would love to see the characters from these books brought to life in the Clone Wars cartoon.
