Star Wars Episode 7: 10 Reasons J.J. Abrams Will Ruin It

4. He Could Make The Same Mistakes As George Lucas

George Lucas made pretty much every mistake that a director and writer could have on the original trilogy; most notably - aside from the terrible script - he decided to film the vast majority of it using green screen, giving every character a garish, blurry hue around them during the vast majority of scenes. The lack of organic content beyond the actors made a cold, clinical experience that was extremely jarring after the comparative warmth of the original three films, which employed a high number of practical effects, and only used visual trickery when the situation absolutely necessitated it. Obviously, we've moved on a lot since A New Hope came out, and embracing visual effects is just part of the process, but too often these days, directors simply take it too far, relying on sprites rather than sets, and having actors cluelessly perform opposite visual cues which can never match up to a human face in make-up. The point is that while we criticise Lucas for his style-over-substance approach, which jettisons humanity in favour of visual "flair", could Abrams not easily fall into the same pitfall? Abrams' action-packed, whiz-bam sci-fi aesthetic, if transposed onto Star Wars, could be a troubling mix; if he is going to do is right, and he should know this, he needs to reign it in and hew clear of the gritty intensity of his current sci-fi franchise.
