Star Wars: Episode 8: 7 Things We Want From The First Trailer

6. BB-8 Being Incredibly Adorable

At its heart, Star Wars is a good old-fashioned adventure romp, a simple tale of good versus evil and a story that is both equal parts darkness, and light.

That darkness/light is both literal - with the Jedi and the Sith - and tonal, with plenty of gloomier moments, like Luke's loss of hand and the destruction of Alderaan, balanced nicely with Solo's one-liners and C-3PO's hilarious naivety. In Episode 7, most of the comedic moments came courtesy of lovable ball-droid BB-8, supplying that light that's utterly essential to the success of the Star Wars formula.

The robot instantly stole everybody's hearts - the 'thumb-up' moment, the numerous beeps and boops, his interactions with R2-D2 - and it all worked really well. As far as character introductions go, it was wildly successful, and the small droid is regularly cited as one of people's favourite parts about The Force Awakens. So, it would be a missed opportunity to not show everyone he's back, and still lovable as ever, in Episode 8's trailer.

BB-8 has the chance to do something similar to Baby Groot, when the latter stole the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teaser despite only being in it for two seconds. He personifies the lighter elements of modern Star Wars and saving a brief moment of him for the trailer's stinger would ensure that it ends on a warm, hopeful note, reminding us why we enjoyed The Force Awakens and hinting at more of this to come.
