Star Wars: Episode 8: 7 Things We Want From The First Trailer

4. Hints Of A Bigger Role For Captain Phasma

One of the most disappointing parts of Episode 7 was a character that promised so much, but delivered so little; Captain Phasma.

That badass exterior was diminished in an instant when it became apparent that her role could be removed from the movie entirely and it literally would not change one bit.

Still, everyone has to start somewhere. The Force Awakens had a lot to pull off so it's not surprising to see some elements get sidelined, and fortunately, there are two more episodes set for release that can work on the areas their predecessor failed in. Phasma is arguably the biggest of these, and assuming her role in Episode 8 is expanded greatly (which it almost certainly will be), it would be good to see these seeds being sown in the first trailer.

Most blockbuster franchises get panned for doing a disservice to their ladies, and Phasma pretty much personified this problem. Showing us that the filmmakers have learned from this mistake and are attempting to do her justice would give Episode 8 a lot of goodwill before it's even released.

Plus, Star Wars is predominantly male-oriented, so giving the Dark Side a strong woman, to balance against the Light Side's Rey, would make for an interesting parallel the saga has not yet explored. By hinting at a bigger role for Phasma, the trailer will begin to rectify a big issue with its predecessor and provide an interesting dynamic Star Wars hasn't touched upon before, all in a handful of seconds.
