Star Wars: Episode 9 - 10 Things The Fans Demand
1. Connect All Three Trilogies
As we've already mentioned, bringing the sequel trilogy to a satisfactory close isn't Episode IX's only concern. JJ Abrams and his team must provide closure on more than four decades of storytelling, and that isn't going to be an easy feat.
It would be apt if the movie successfully unified the three Star Wars trilogies, somehow referencing and building on the events of all eight movies in a meaningful way. The latest films have done this to an extent, but their ties with the prequels are minimal.
Some fans might think this is for the best, while others are happy to accept that the prequels are canon and the lore they laid down should be treated with respect by all future films. In any case, not everything about them was terrible and there are plot threads that could still be expanded all these years later.
For instance, Episode IX could revisit the Chosen One prophesy by having a Force ghost Anakin reveal it was somebody else all along - Rey, or perhaps even Kylo Ren.
This is merely one example of how Abrams could weave a common thread between all nine core chapters of the Star Wars saga. There are other ways he could do it, but whatever path he chooses, let's hope he provides closure for the Skywalkers.
