2. A Substantial Time Jump
It has been hinted that Episode IX will pick up a number of years after the events of The Last Jedi, and most Star Wars fans will be glad about that.
Why? Well, because both the Rebel Alliance and the First Order's forces were seriously depleted by the end of the last movie. There Jedi Order is basically dust and everyone needs time to regroup and think about their next move.
As a trilogy-capper and the film that will bring the curtain down on the Skywalker saga, the fans are hoping Episode IX will be epic in every sense, and that means large-scale space skirmishes and battlefield escapades.
The movie will only be able to deliver these eye-popping set pieces by allowing both the heroes and the villains to go on a mass-recruitment spree, and a substantial time jump to a period where that has already taken place would set up Episode IX nicely.
Perhaps when the film picks up Rey will have started training up a new Jedi Order, and some cool new villains have joined the ranks of the First Order to replace the likes of Snoke and Captain Phasma.
