Star Wars Episode IX: 10 Directors Who Could Replace Colin Trevorrow

Why He Should Direct: Even ignoring the fact that he successfully rejuvenated the Star Wars franchise with The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams is one of the most reliable blockbuster directors working today.

Every single movie he's made has been at least broadly successful with critics and audiences alike, so as long Episode IX's script is in good shape, he's a choice both safe and inspired.

How Likely Is It?: Abrams was rather vocal about how The Force Awakens' extensive production burned him out, and it's hard to believe he'd want to put himself through that again.

Plus, he's always stressed that he wanted to make just one Star Wars movie and leave the others for different filmmakers.

All that said, he hasn't directed a movie since The Force Awakens and is definitely overdue a return to the director's chair. Perhaps with the right money and a shooting schedule that's more accommodating, he could be enticed back?

It's not hugely likely, but not totally out of the question either. 4/10
