Star Wars Episode IX: 10 Directors Who Could Replace Colin Trevorrow

9. Joe Johnston

Why He Should Direct: Jumanji, Jurassic Park III and Captain America: The First Avenger director isn't just well-versed in helming successful blockbusters, but also worked on the special effects of the first two Star Wars films, so has a history with the series almost as long as George Lucas'.

Johnston has been in contention for various Star Wars directing gigs in recent years, including being tipped to replace Phil Lord and Chris Miller on Han Solo, so it's safe to say he's probably on the longlist in the very least.

How Likely Is It?: Johnson has had long-standing working relationships with Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy, and he's certainly a safe pair of hands, but Kennedy is probably more likely to hire a younger filmmaker, keeping in line with her ethos to bring on-the-rise artists into the Star Wars universe.

Plus, Johnson is attached to direct the new Narnia movie at some point, which could complicate his involvement. 5/10
