2. Make The Enemy Rank And File Less Incompetent Than The Stormtroopers

There's no denying that the stormtroopers in the original Star Wars movies look pretty cool - their helmets might be a little quirky but the popularity of their costumes at fancy dress parties around the world proves that there's a great appeal to their design. Given that the stormtroopers are supposed to be the Empire's crack soldiers it's inexplicable why they behave with such incompetence. Their aim is frequently atrocious and when confronted with significantly lower numbers - as when they face Han Solo in the corridors of the Death Star - their first reaction is to run away. It detracts from the sense of menace when the rank and file of what is supposed to be the most powerful organization in the galaxy can't even shoot straight - hopefully Episode VII's equivalent will behave like they've managed to get through basic training...
