Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 6 New Things To Learn From The Trailer

5. Lightsaber Crossbars Solve The Hand-Loss Problem

Whoever it was that manufactured the original lightsabers in the Star Wars universe, they clearly didn't put the end result through much quality control testing. For a weapon that can slice through flesh like warm butter, its always been rather bizarre to see Jedi and Sith warriors alike not to be to bothered about the fact that their upper appendages are completely unprotected against a well-aimed slice. Luke lost his hand in his fight with Vader in Empire Strikes Back, with the former repaying the limb-severing move in Return Of The Jedi and yet it seems to have taken thirty years for the energy sword wielding warriors to come up with a solution: crossbars. Yes, two simple protruding energy beams above the hilt of such a weapon is all it takes to protect your mitts from some nasty hand-loss. Many fans have already lambasted the short reveal as an unnecessary change to an iconic weapon, and while that mindset is usually agreeable, it's not true here. The modifications have a very real and practical reason for existing.
