Star Wars: Ranking Every Space Battle Worst To Best

"Great shot kid that was one in a million!"

Return of the Jedi Space Battle
Lucasfilm

Most of us are still reeling from the latest instalment of Star Wars at the end of 2019. While it delivered in a lot of ways, it's certainly fair to say that the film divided critics and fans alike.

But, with the three trilogies now wrapped up nicely, it at least gives us some time to reflect on one of the greatest movie franchises of all time and pick out our best bits.

Of course, everyone loves a good lightsaber battle and who doesn't enjoy seeing the Force being used expertly?

However, one thing often overlooked in Star Wars is the quality of the space battles we witness. A lot has changed since 1977. Special effects are better, ideas can be brought to life far easier, and the power of 3 and 4D has given cinema-goers a whole new experience altogether.

Despite the power of modern technology though, does that necessarily mean the best graphics and effects mean the best space battle? It's a question this writer has wracked his brain about for some time.

So, which battle is strong with The Force and which battle falls as flat as Jar Jar Binks one-liner?

15. Battle Of Naboo - Episode I

The first prequel gives us our first entry on this particular list and although it's a decent watch, it's not a patch on the rest of the entries due.

A young Anakin shows us his skills as a pilot as he strictly obeys Qui-Gon's orders to "stay in the cockpit". Young Skywalker does just that, and ends up in a spot of bother.

Aside from a few cheesy lines - "take this" and "now this, is pod racing" - being among them, there are definitely some nice bits in the Battle of Naboo.

Obviously, Anakin wins the day as he destroys the Viceroy's ship from the inside.

It's not perfect, nor is it mind-blowing, but it does its job and contributes to a decent enough finale for The Phantom Menace.
