Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker - Everything It Gets Wrong

3. Rushing "Reylo"

Of all the things Rian Johnson messed up, the chemistry between Rey and Kylo across The Last Jedi was actually spot on.

Though the "shirtless Kylo" scene came out of nowhere, it did sew the seed of the pair being romantically involved, and after they slaughter Snoke and his guards, the notion of pairing up was supremely well executed.

However, as the idea of them being together clearly wasn't supposed to be a thing until the VERY end of the trilogy, JJ is forced to retcon their relationship and reset them back to The Force Awakens'-levels of opposition.

All sense of romanticism is ditched as they yell at and attack each other for 99% of the movie, eventually ending up in close proximity after Kylo brings Rey back to life.

It's here where the kiss happens, but it feels borne entirely from box-ticking than any throughline buildup or earned payoff.

In the very next scene you wouldn't know a former "lover" of Rey's had passed away, as she immediately moves onto hugging everyone else and revisiting Luke's house on Tatooine.

Kylo and Rey could've been "Anakin and Padme" done right - forbidden love crossing light and dark side boundaries to create something altogether more powerful, yet forbidden and tragic.

And yet... we got a shirtless scene, some finger touching and a random kiss.

Good job guys.
