Chirrut and Baze already sound pretty interesting - a representation of faith and scepticism in a mostly agnostic galaxy - but there's more to their character genesis that makes them even more intriguing; according to Kathleen Kennedy, "They’re inspired, again, by what inspired George in The Hidden Fortress."

The Hidden Fortress is the story of a farm boy hero going up against a dark lord to save a princess from a massive base with the help of a couple of bickering friends and... yeah, you get it; the film was a major inspiration for the original Star Wars, and to see Rogue One return to that well shows an refreshing understanding of what Star Wars was originally.

Quite what this says about the pair's relationship is unclear, however. Are they going to be as snipey as C-3PO and R2-D2 or simply good friends who's relationship transcends the mission at hand? I'm going to say the latter, simply because the other option would be too regurgitative.
