The first announcement of EW's Rogue One issue hinted that one of the movie's heroes was actually someone we'd met before, which kicked speculation into over-gear. In the end it turns out it's not actually one of the main heroes, nor is the reprisal someone from the other films, but it's still pretty cool all the same; Forest Whitaker is playing Saw Gerrera, who was first seen in an episode of The Clone Wars and was referenced in recent pre-The Force Awakens novel Bloodline.

In the show he ran into Anakin and Obi-Wan, who provide him with assistance and training in holding off his planet from the Separatist forces. Because that happened twenty years or so before Rogue One, it's to be expected this version of Saw will be a little different; indeed, additional to cosmetic changes made in the cross from animated TV to live-action movie (such as adjustment of scars), his character much further down the line. When he tells Jyn "if you continue to fight, what will you become?" he's speaking from experience, having been broken during the fall of the Republic.

While it is just a character from a single episode of a cartoon watched mainly by kids and die-hards, this is a major development. There's plenty of cases where the movies lifted from the Expanded Universe, but this is the first time it's explicitly happened since Disney took over and gives a taste of how the multimedia Star Wars franchise will expand in the coming years.
