Star Wars Rogue One: 20 WTF Moments
16. The Off-Kilter Editing & Pacing
It's not too surprising that Rogue One feels rather shapeless in terms of editing and pacing, considering the re-shoots that took place in order to fix issues Disney had with Gareth Edwards' first pass of the film.
This results in the film's pacing feeling totally off in the first and third acts in particular: we're rushed through being introduced to the key players and hurled into the war, and then the last third is forced to sprint through the final showdown while also paying lip service to Darth Vader.
The moment-to-moment editing is also fairly messy, with Edwards fleeting around fussily rather than lingering on some of his better shot selections, which is a shame.
Above all else it's a reminder that while The Force Awakens was an overly safe, risk-averse product, J.J. Abrams seemed to have a much firmer handle on the technical aspects of his film.
