The Force Awakens was the first of the seven Star Wars movies where not a single character lost a limb of any kind, though a scene in which Chewbacca rips off Unkar Plutt's arm was in fact filmed, and is included in the novelisation.

Rogue One, then, is unambiguously the first movie with no limb removal of any kind, perhaps signalling that the newer Star Wars movies are going to move away from this trope (which given their reliance on nostalgia is really quite surprising).

After all, there are only so many times a severed limb can be shocking or effective.
