The Rogue Squadron is the rebel starfighter unit formed directly after The Battle Of Yavin in A New Hope, and the Star Wars Expanded Universe is filled with stories of its adventures, most of which have sadly since been de-canonised.

However, the fact that Bodhi nonchalantly decides to name his vessel Rogue One in the movie's third act basically explains where the unit's origins came from.

It wasn't necessary in the slightest, but a fun tip of the hat to the future all the same, as well as recognising the lasting influence this ragtag band of heroes had on the wider universe.
