It's safe to assume the Rebel Alliance is in the dark about the Death Star at the film's beginning. Audiences will most likely see a young Jyn watching Director Krennic and his Death Troopers whisking away her father against his will. It wouldn't be a surprise either if her mother is also killed at the Imperials' hands during this time.

This will begin Jyn's path for revenge. While clearly not a Rebel operative at the start, she will join the group to achieve her own goals. The Rebel Alliance however, will seek out Jyn because of the coded message they recieve from her father Galen. It's possible this message will have some sort of cipher only Jyn can understand, thus introducing her involvement.

While the film pitch revolves around the stealing of the Death Star plans, the primary mission objective will be to rescue Galen Erso. Whether this is a Rebel mandated mission, or Jyn acting on her own accord with the help of her new friends, will have to be explored. It'll be through this rescue attempt that the Rebels realize the full scope of the power the Empire now posses and the terrible weapon now in their hands.
