Why He Could Live: A character originally seen in The Clone Wars, Saw Gerrera is a major statement of intent from Lucasfilm, showing how their universe will be synergised across all media going forward. As such, it'd be rather dickish to just off him, essentially saying that movies trump everything else and all ye who enter from elsewhere are cursed.

Why He Could Die: Everything we've seen suggests Forrest Whitaker's character isn't long for this galaxy; all footage of him released thus far takes place in a single location, one that seems to have been shown exploding in the latest trailer. I don't like those odds. The character also seems to be positioned as a cautionary tale for where rebellion can take you, so it only makes sense for that warning to end in death.

Prediction: He's only in one scene, giving Jyn clues for the next step of her journey before dying in a heroic last stand against the Imperials.
