Star Wars is really going all in with badass female characters. The Force Awakens had Rey, a self-assured parallell to Luke, and now we have Jyn, who takes the idea of the rough-and-tumble loner and amps it up; we learn she's been on her own from the age of fifteen and has an impressive list of previous crimes - "forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest".

This is pretty much right down the middle between Han Solo and Rey - you have isolation and self-preservation mixed with a rebel without a plan - which promises a great new character. Although not everyone sees those traits as as a good thing.
