Star Wars: Rogue One Vs Solo - Which Is Better?
3. Visuals
If absolutely nothing else, Rogue One is an utterly beautiful film in terms of visual effects (practical or otherwise), set design, and cinematography. Jedha was lovingly-crafted, its destruction looked utterly stellar, the space battles were some of the franchise's best, and every single thing about Scarif was absolutely gorgeous.
Let's also address the elephant in the room: the CGI recreations of Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin) and young Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), which, quite frankly, are nowhere near as bad as some people make them out to be. Sure, they weren't perfect (given the experimental nature of the effect), but they still looked pretty great, all things considered. And the fact that they were able to pull this off at all while also making the rest of the film look as beautiful as they did is pretty remarkable.
Solo had its moments of visual brilliance as well. The costume and set design were on point, the explosion that toppled a mountain at the end of the train heist sequence was something to behold, and the monster that attacked the Millennium Falcon near the maw was absolutely breathtaking (as was the Kessel Run as a whole.)
Winner: Solo had some undeniably great visuals, but they pale in comparison to the crisp, unparalleled beauty that was on display throughout Rogue One's entire runtime. Your feelings on the CGI resurrections aside, Rogue One deserves this point.
