Star Wars: Rogue One Vs Solo - Which Is Better?
2. Mythology
As stated before, both Rogue One and Solo do a fantastic job at adding moral ambiguity to the Star Wars films. And while some old-school fans of the series are hesitant to accept it, the fact of the matter is that if Star Wars is to carry forward, it needs to have shades of gray. Through Rogue One and Solo (as well as The Last Jedi), Lucasfilm have proven that they understand this.
In addition to their fresh take on "good versus evil", Rogue One and Solo also had their fair share of new lore and ideas to add to the Star Wars mythos.
Rogue One, much like the TV series Rebels, makes it a point to show viewers what it was like for the common people of the galaxy to live under the rule of the Empire. It also does a great job at showing the fallout of the Jedi Order's downfall through Chirrut's fighting techniques and apparent Force-sensitivity, as well as the state of the Jedi temple on Jedha. Finally, there's the touching, overarching story of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to make sure the iconic Rebellion could live to fight another day.
Meanwhile, Solo has gotten some serious flak for its mere existence, as some believes that giving Han a backstory detracts from his character's mystique. In reality, though, it was clear from day one that Han had some serious stories to tell, so finally getting to see one first-hand feels pretty special. What's more is that Solo added a lot of depth to Han's character that retroactively carries over into the Original Trilogy.
Winner: Both films succeed in helping to fill in the gap between Episodes III and IV, but whereas Solo helped flesh out Han himself, Rogue One is so much bigger than itself in terms of the Star Wars mythology it built upon. So, Rogue One takes the final point.
