Star Wars: Solo Full Trailer - 8 Major Plot Reveals

In the main trailer, we hear Han saying that he was "kicked out of Flight Academy for having a mind of [his] own."

This follows on from what we witness in the Super Bowl teaser, where Han has an interview with an Imperial officer and declares that he wants to be a pilot, so we can assume he is successful in that endeavour, before then being kicked out.

The story offered up here might sound familiar to some Star Wars fans, and that's because it hues closely to one from the Expanded Universe, which was de-canonised by the Disney takeover of Lucasfilm. In what's now a Legends story, a young Solo worked for crime boss Garris Shrike for a number of years, before serving in the Imperial Academy with distinction. His time there, however, was cut short when he stopped an officer who was severely beating a Wookiee.

That Wookiee in question was, of course, Chewbacca, with the life debt being formed along with Star Wars' strongest partnership. Chewie is a big part of this film, and seeing how they met makes sense for the timeframe, so it's another element they might use here. Lucasfilm are prepared to take from Legends when they see fit, and this is shaping up to be one such instance.

The alternative theory to this is that he's going undercover, and this is part of Beckett's mission. There's not a lot to base this on, but Han does attract the Empire's attention later in the movie, while Thandie Newton was seen on set sporting Imperial insignia, so it is a possibility.
