The problem with this movie, which it somewhat has in common with Rogue One, is that we know most of how it turns out. We know that Lando, Han and Chewie all survive, that the Falcon isn't destroyed and that every hint of peril for any of that central four is misplaced and manufactured.

That makes the decision to have a tease of Chewie being in grave danger a little silly and generally trying to pull those sorts of reactions out of the audience likewise. We know they're all going to be fine, so maybe the trailer should have focused a little more on the characters we DON'T know about.

They're the key to driving the heart - as they were in Rogue One - and it's no accident that seeing what appears to be Chewie's mate for about a nanosecond was one of the most authentically emotional moments in the whole thing.
