Star Wars Spin-Off: 10 Lessons Gareth Edwards Must Learn From Godzilla

1. The Importance Of A Good Script

For all the musings here regarding what Gareth Edwards should learn from his directing Godzilla and the response to it, the single biggest contributor to any failings of that film lie with the script. While not bad, the script for Godzilla is serviceable; decent at best and cliché at worst. In hindsight, the amount of revisions and writers involved should have tipped us off, but in the hands of a lessor director, Godzilla could have been a true disaster. Luckily Edwards brought out the best elements of the story through his excellent direction and visual style to the point where they overpower the structural issues of the script, even if you are still aware of them. What this shows is just how important this is overall; story is the single most important aspect of a movie; everything else is just a means of bringing it to life. So if Gareth Edwards' Star Wars film is to be an improved entry into his filmography, it has to have a good script. Should this be the case, nearly all the problems that plagued Godzilla won't be present for Star Wars. It all comes down to the script; that is the biggest factor that will make this Star Wars spin-off either a disappointment or success. We shall wait with bated breath and hope for the best as this talented up and comer continues to conquer this dreams.
