Okay, it's time to stop armchair-critiquing Gareth Edwards' directing and tell it like it is: he is an exceptional visual storyteller. Regardless of whatever criticism is thrown his way, he should always focus on what he knows he is good at, and that is action and spectacle. The entertainment value of Godzilla mostly comes from this aspect, and even those who don't particularly like it often recommend it for this reason alone. So good are the visual elements that it is guaranteed you will get goosebumps at some point. With this fact in mind, it is not surprising whatsoever that Disney offered Gareth Edwards the job mere days after Godzilla's release to the public. With a relatively modest budget considering the material, he was able to achieve a sense of scale that some couldn't pull off with 200 million. His talent lies in creating grand scale stories on an intimate level, which in all honesty sounds perfect for Star Wars. Despite the naysayers, there is a lot of positivity surrounding Godzilla and Gareth Edwards, and he should take away as much from that as the criticisms.
